Short-term Evaluation of Efficacy and Biocompatibility of Artificial Corneal Transplantation in Rabbit Model

Purpose: To examine the efficacy and biocompatibility of a new artificial cornea using rabbit model.Methods: Artificial were transplanted into 20 New Zealand white rabbits. The disc-shaped is diameter 8.0 mm (the core, clear optical zone 5.0 that peripheral skirt 1.5 mm); thickness 0.5 mm; fabricated from PHEMA, PMMA, PETTA. Transplantation proceeded in two stages; all rabbits then observed weekly to 12 weeks. Anterior segment photographs taken, anterior coherence tomography histological analysis performed, confirm extents cell proliferation surrounding tissues.Results: Two sacrificed for examination weeks 4 8 (one each). Four eyes failed because surgical errors (artificial corneal decentration or excessively thin flaps). Of which surgery was technically successful, six (50.0%) maintained structure transparency Histology revealed cells proliferated bound tissues. Six evidenced protrusions cornea.Conclusions: met with some success (as confirmed anatomically optically). However, improvement techniques are required increase rate. Also, long-term follow-up needed.
